President Jokowi Visits Freeport Mining Area for the First Time in Timika

TIMIKA, JAKTIMES.COM- President Jokowi for the first time visited the Freeport mining area in Grasberg, Timika, Papua (1/9).

After traveling by four-wheeled vehicle, Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) and Mrs. Iriana Jokowi and their entourage arrived in Grasberg, Thursday (01/09/2022), at 08.15 Eastern Indonesia Time (WIT).

In Grasberg, the President and Mrs. Iriana accompanied by PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) President Director Tony Wenas visited the Bunaken Museum to get an explanation of PTFI’s mining history.

Tony explained that Grasberg was the second mine, while the first was Ertsberg.

“Now there are no more mining in those two mines?” President Jokowi asked as quoted by Jaktimes.com from the official Seskab website (1/9).

“There is no longer 100 percent mining in Etsberg and Grasberg. Now it is reclamation and we are maintaining the stability of the slopes,” said Tony.

While looking at PTFI’s open pit mining area from Grasberg, the President also spoke with PTFI President Commissioner Richard Adkerson.

After being in Grasberg for two hours, the President and Mrs. Iriana and their entourage continued their journey to underground mining. Also present to accompany the President, Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung, Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) Erick Thohir, and Minister of Investment/Head of Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Bahlil Lahadalia (Wan)
