JAKARTA, JAKTIMES.COM – Jakarta’s Acting Governor, Heru Budi Hartono, mentioned the slow sales at Tanah Abang Market in Central Jakarta, due to changes in consumer shopping habits.
“First of all, it might be part of the consumer shift towards buying things. Here, there is already online shopping and such, and we all need to take note of that,” Heru said when met in North Jakarta on Saturday.
Heru believes that consumers have shifted to online shopping rather than shopping at traditional markets.
According to him, this phenomenon is not unique to Indonesia; consumers in other countries also prefer online shopping.
“It’s not just here. In other places, abroad, there’s also a change in residents’ and consumers’ buying habits towards online concepts,” Heru said, as quoted by Jaktimes.com from Antara.

Heru also emphasized that the government can provide digitalization training to Tanah Abang Market traders to help increase their sales.
On the other hand, Tanah Abang traders claimed that the price wars offered through “live shopping” on several social media platforms have significantly reduced their sales.
They have also attempted to adopt the same selling method, namely “live shopping,” as done by social media influencers.
However, this has not yielded positive results either. As a result, the operational costs for the traders are higher than their income, affecting those in the vicinity, including employees, porters, and food vendors in Tanah Abang who are also facing a lack of buyers (Ant/Jaktimes)
