ICMI Calls on the State to Protect the Public from the Negative Impacts of Artificial Intelligence

JAKARTA, JAKTIMES.COM – The Indonesian Association of Muslim Scholars (ICMI) is urging the government to address the various negative impacts that have arisen from the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

“The state should be present in the form of strong legal protection through laws and government regulations to safeguard the younger generation from various threats posed by AI, such as issues related to LGBT, sexual violence, and online lending,” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Riri Fitri Sari, MM., M.Sc., the Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Muslim Scholars (ICMI) in the field of Empowerment of Women, Children, Youth, the Elderly, and Health, in a media release on Saturday, October 28, 2023, in Jakarta.

Riri added that families also need to continuously prepare their children to maintain physical health by following a healthy lifestyle and ensuring a balanced diet to prevent issues such as stunting, wasting, underweight, and overweight.

“The family plays a significant role in facing the challenges posed by AI, particularly in how parents raise their children’s character to ensure the realization of Indonesia’s Golden Generation by 2045,” said Riri.

According to Riri, there are several challenges faced by families in the era of artificial intelligence, including technology dependence, data privacy and security, technology disparities, impacts on employment, ethics, and morality.

“The effects on family resilience include a shift in the norms of politeness between children and parents, a reduction in the sense of togetherness among family members, psychological disturbances, declining academic performance, and deviant behavior,” she explained.

Regarding the risks of technological advancements, Prof. Riri mentioned the widespread reach of LGBT issues, facilitated by the development of technology and social media, enabling more people to access information about LGBT and receive support from a broader LGBT community.

Additionally, there is a threat of Gender-Based Online Violence (GBOV), which involves direct violence against someone based on their sex or gender, facilitated by online technology. Privacy breaches are another concern, as AI can threaten digital security. Online fraud remains an issue due to our limited knowledge of the virtual world, making it easy for criminals to deceive us.

Riri also pointed out the negative effects of digital technology, particularly on the younger generation, who are becoming more individualistic and struggling to control their emotions.

“It is important to develop digital literacy within families to address the AI era effectively, enabling the optimal utilization of technology, enhancing adaptability, supporting children’s education, raising awareness of cyber security, increasing productivity, and broadening access to information,” she added.

Parents Need to Provide Preventive Education

Riri emphasized that parents need to understand the importance of character education for their children through preventive education.

Serious awareness among parents about the fundamental and continuous implementation of character education is required. Furthermore, parental supervision and control are essential to ensure that the character education taught is comprehensively conveyed and applied by their children.

In theory, there are six criteria for family resilience: appreciation and affection, positive communication, commitment to the family, comfort when together, mental well-being, and the ability to address problems.

To avoid the negative influence of digitalization, it is essential to strengthen communication, continue learning, use parental control applications, establish rules for social media, spend quality time together, assist victims of online exploitation, enhance faith and piety, and promote ethical behavior.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a form of technology created to simulate human cognitive functions, including data analysis, pattern recognition, environmental understanding, and decision-making.

The use of AI significantly impacts various aspects of life, including thought patterns, social relationships, and economic activities. The role and function of families have also shifted due to the impact of AI.

The seminar on “Family Resilience in the Era of Artificial Intelligence” is a regular program conducted by the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Association of Muslim Scholars (MPP ICMI), known for its “ICMI Goes to Campus” activities.

This event is coordinated by the Deputy Chairman of ICMI 6 in the field of Health, Empowerment of Women, Children, Youth, and the Elderly, led by Prof. Dr. Ir. Riri Fitri Sari, MM., M.Sc. The ICMI Goes to Campus program has been implemented at 26 public and private universities across Indonesia (Marwan Azis).
