JAKARTA, JAKTIMES.COM- Indonesian President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) received and awarded bonuses and appreciation to the athletes of the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia at the front yard of Istana Merdeka, Jakarta, on Monday (05/06/2023).
In his speech, President Jokowi expressed his pride in the achievements of the Indonesian contingent, which exceeded the target at the SEA Games in Cambodia.
“On behalf of the people, on behalf of the nation, on behalf of the country, I would like to express my deepest gratitude and appreciation for the efforts of all of you, including the medalists, athletes, coaches, assistant coaches, assistants, and everyone who has worked hard to achieve this,” said the President.
Out of the 69 gold medals targeted by President Jokowi, the athletes who competed in the SEA Games managed to win a total of 87 gold medals, 80 silver medals, and 109 bronze medals.
“I believe that the people are currently very happy and proud of the leap in gold medal achievements, which reached 87 gold medals,” said the President.
The President also expressed surprise and joy at the success of four sports branches, namely women’s basketball, men’s indoor hockey, women’s cricket, and football, in winning gold medals at the SEA Games in Cambodia. These four sports branches ended a long-awaited period of contributing gold medals to Indonesia.
The Women’s National Basketball Team ended a 64-year wait, while the Men’s Indoor Hockey Team and the Women’s Cricket Team contributed gold medals for the first time since their participation in the SEA Games.
“The football team, which has never won gold in 32 years, finally did it. Thirty-two years without gold, and now they have it,” added the President.
In his closing remarks, the President reminded the athletes to continue improving their achievements in the future. The Head of State also advised the athletes to make the best use of the bonuses provided by the government, especially for long-term investments.
“Do not spend it on luxury goods that are not beneficial. If you invest in medium or long-term assets, their value will always increase. If you buy a car and sell it next year, it will already be worth half,” he emphasized.
The total bonus provided by the government to athletes, coaches, and assistant coaches amounted to Rp289 billion. The breakdown of the bonuses is as follows:
