BMKG Issues Early Warning for Strong Winds in Jakarta Waters, Residents Urged to Stay Alert

Environment Jakarta

JAKARTA, JAKTIMES.COM — Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), through the Tanjung Priok Maritime Meteorological Station, has issued an early warning for strong winds expected to affect parts of Jakarta on December 18–19, 2025. The public is advised to remain calm while exercising heightened vigilance.

In its official statement, BMKG said strong winds are likely to occur from midday through nighttime, with speeds reaching 20–25 knots (approximately 37–46 km/h), equivalent to Beaufort Scale 5–6. These conditions may cause fallen trees, collapsed billboards, and damage to non-permanent structures, particularly in coastal areas.

For the Jakarta region, potentially affected waters include Jakarta Bay and the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu). BMKG forecasts wave heights of 0.5–1.25 meters (low category) in Jakarta Bay and the waters off Cirebon. Meanwhile, moderate waves of 1.25–2.5 meters are expected in the waters around the Thousand Islands.

BMKG also warned of maritime safety risks for various types of vessels. Fishing boats are at risk when wind speeds exceed 15 knots and wave heights rise above 1.25 meters. Barges face danger at wind speeds above 16 knots and waves over 1.5 meters, while ferry vessels are at risk when winds exceed 21 knots with waves higher than 2.5 meters. Large vessels such as cargo ships and cruise liners may encounter hazardous conditions at wind speeds above 27 knots and wave heights exceeding four meters.

As a precaution, BMKG has urged residents to avoid sheltering under large trees and billboards, secure outdoor items, and ensure their surroundings are safe. Fishermen and shipping operators are also advised to pay close attention to mooring distances and continuously monitor the latest weather and wave updates issued by BMKG.

“The public is expected to remain calm, avoid panic, and prioritize safety by following official weather information from BMKG,” the agency stated (Wan)
