E-Commerce, QRIS, and E-Money Push Jakarta’s Economy to New Heights

JAKARTA, JAKTIMES.COM – The rapid growth of digital payment systems is giving a significant boost to Jakarta’s economic performance, particularly in household consumption.

“The velocity of non-cash payments in Jakarta has reached 1.25,” said Yosamartha, Deputy Head of Bank Indonesia’s Jakarta Representative Office, on Monday (Aug 11). “This reflects the massive adoption of digital channels such as QRIS, e-money, and mobile banking by the public.”

Household consumption in the capital grew by 5.17 percent, with most transactions now conducted digitally. E-commerce activity also surged in 2025, fueled by robust consumer spending.

Digitalization is not only transforming the private sector — the Jakarta Provincial Government is also leading the way. Data from the first half of 2025 shows Jakarta’s Regional Government Transaction Electronification Index (ETPD) reached 99.8 percent, the highest in Java.

QRIS contributed 3.41 percent to Jakarta’s local revenue (PAD), with 51 percent of government transactions fully digital, 12 percent semi-digital, and 34 percent non-cash.

On a national scale, Jakarta’s role is striking: as of June 2025, digital transactions in the capital totaled Rp 2.3 billion, accounting for 43 percent of the national total, even though users represent just 11 percent of the national figure and merchants 16.5 percent.

Innovation trials are also underway, including Cross-Border QRIS and QRIS Tap for transport, healthcare, retail, and parking. One pilot project for QRIS Tap has already been tested at Lippo Mall Nusantara’s parking facility (formerly Plaza Semanggi).

Collaboration with the Jakarta Government continues to expand, including a market digitalization competition initiated by Governor Pramono Anung to encourage traditional market vendors to embrace digital payments.

“Many initiatives start in Jakarta and become models for other regions,” Yosamartha said. “We want to ensure digitalization is optimized in both government and private sectors, working hand-in-hand with all stakeholders.” (Wan).
