JAKARTA, JAKTIMES.COM — Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has urged residents in the capital’s coastal areas to remain alert.
Based on information from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Jakarta is predicted to experience the peak of tidal flooding on Friday (Dec 5) at 9:00 AM WIB.
Pramono said he received the data on the potential tidal surge yesterday. He immediately relayed the warning to the public so that residents could prepare for a possible rise in sea levels.
“Since yesterday I have received the data, and I have informed the public that tidal flooding would occur, and it happened today. The peak of the tidal flood will be tomorrow, December 5, at 9:00 AM,” Pramono said on Thursday (Dec 4).
He explained that coordination has been carried out with the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), the Water Resources Agency, and municipal authorities in coastal areas to ensure proper mitigation measures.
Residents in North Jakarta are advised to secure important belongings, move their vehicles to safe locations, and follow the instructions of officers on the ground.
BMKG previously announced that the new moon phase may trigger higher sea tides in several coastal areas, including Jakarta. This condition could cause flooding in certain locations at specific times.
The Jakarta provincial government will continue monitoring weather developments and urges residents to use official government or BMKG channels to obtain the latest updates (Wan)
