JAKARTA, JAKTIMESI.COM- FIFA President Gianni Infantino called the Kanjuruhan tragedy that occurred after the Arema FC vs. Persebaya Surabaya match which ended in a 2-3 defeat for the hosts, Saturday (1/10) as a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension.
“The world of football is in turmoil following the tragic incident that occurred in Indonesia at the end of the match between Arema FC and Persebaya Surabaya at the Kanjuruhan Stadium,” said Gianni, quoted from the official FIFA website, Sunday.
He expressed his condolences for the Kanjuruhan tragedy. “I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims who lost their lives following this tragic incident.
“With FIFA and the global football community, all our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, those who have been injured, with the people of the Republic of Indonesia, the Asian Football Confederation, the Indonesian Football Association and the Indonesian Football League, at this difficult time. this,” he said.
In that match, thousands of spectators invaded the field following the defeat of Arema FC and sparked a riot so that the police took action by throwing tear gas. Previously, the Head of the Malang Regency Health Office, Wiyanto Wijoyo, said the number of victims was 130. However, the Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) Team of the Police recorded temporary data on the number of victims who died in the tragedy as many as 125 people.
As a result of this riot, competition operator PT Liga Indonesia Baru (LIB) suspended the Indonesian Liga 1 2022-2023 for a week and this was a directive from PSSI chairman Mochammad Iriawan.
LIB stated that the riots that occurred at the Kanjuruhan Stadium caused several people to die. However, the number of victims who lost their lives is still uncertain (Fifa/Ant/Sporta/TC/JT).
