JAKARTA, JAKTIMES.COM — On this year’s Heroes Day, November 10, 2025, President Prabowo Subianto officially named ten prominent Indonesian figures as National Heroes.
Among them are two of the country’s former presidents — Soeharto, Indonesia’s second president, and Abdurrahman Wahid (Gus Dur), the fourth president.
The solemn ceremony took place at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday morning (10/11/2025), attended by Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, members of the Red and White Cabinet, and leaders of state institutions. The event began with the national anthem Indonesia Raya, followed by the reading of Presidential Decree No. 116/TK/2025 on the Conferment of the National Hero Title.
In his address, President Prabowo emphasized that the honor is not merely symbolic but a recognition of lifelong dedication and extraordinary service to the nation.
“A great nation is one that honors its heroes. We must learn from their courage, sacrifice, and love for Indonesia,” Prabowo stated.

Soeharto and Gus Dur: Two Eras, One Nation
The joint recognition of Soeharto and Gus Dur marks a historic moment. Though they led Indonesia in vastly different eras and styles, both are now officially acknowledged for their lasting contributions to the nation’s development.
Observers see President Prabowo’s decision as an effort to foster national reconciliation by honoring figures across Indonesia’s political spectrum.
Marsinah: A Voice for the Voiceless
The inclusion of Marsinah, a factory worker and labor activist murdered in 1993, drew particular attention. Her recognition is viewed as a powerful symbol of justice and equality, highlighting the government’s acknowledgment of grassroots struggles.
The Meaning of Heroes Day
The conferment of National Hero titles is held annually following a rigorous selection process involving government ministries and historians.
This year’s list, analysts say, reflects a broader vision of heroism, encompassing not only political and military leaders but also educators and social activists.
The ceremony concluded with heartfelt emotion as the families of the honorees received the certificates directly from President Prabowo. With this year’s additions, Indonesia now has over 200 officially recognized National Heroes (Wan)
