GAZA, JAKTIMES.COM – Tragedy struck Gaza on Sunday night (Aug 10, 2025), as two Al Jazeera journalists — Anas Al-Sharif (28) and Mohammed Quraiqa — were killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting a press tent in front of Al-Shifa Hospital.
Anas, widely regarded as one of Gaza’s bravest reporters, was known for his fearless live coverage from the frontlines. The Israeli military had previously accused him of being a Hamas member, an allegation firmly denied by Al Jazeera and various international groups. Critics have called the strike a deliberate attempt to silence voices speaking truth to power.
The attack also claimed the lives of two cameramen — Ibrahim Zaher and Moamen Aliwa — and Mohammed Noufal, an assistant to Quraiqa. Al-Shifa Hospital confirmed a total of seven deaths from the incident.
In one of his final messages, Anas wrote: “I have never hesitated to tell the truth as it is… if you are reading this, it means Israel has succeeded in killing me and silencing my voice.”
His words were a plea for the world not to forget Gaza’s suffering.
Al Jazeera described the strike as a “deliberate attempt to silence voices exposing the occupation’s intentions for Gaza,” urging the international community to defend press freedom. The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) also condemned the attack, calling it an assault on civilian reporters.
The UN Special Rapporteur had earlier voiced concerns over threats made against Anas — threats that never materialized into evidence.
The deaths of Anas and his colleagues add to the grim toll of the conflict: more than 180 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the war began (Marwan Aziz).
