Jakarta Now Guarded by Two Three-Star Generals as Prabowo Tightens Security Grip on Capital

JAKARTA, JAKTIMES.COM— Indonesian National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo confirmed that the promotion of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police chief to a three-star general was carried out under direct instructions from President Prabowo Subianto.

The move officially makes Jakarta the only region in Indonesia protected by both a three-star police general and a three-star military commander at the same time.

“This is a follow-up to the President’s directive that Jakarta’s military commander and police chief should both hold three-star ranks,” Listyo said in Jakarta on Thursday (May 14).

Under the decision, Jakarta Police Chief Asep Edi Suheri was promoted from Inspector General (two-star) to Commissioner General (three-star).
The promotion was formalized through Presidential Decree No. 38/POLRI/2026 dated May 13, 2026.

The policy underscores Jakarta’s growing strategic importance as Indonesia’s political, economic, and security nerve center, amid rising urban challenges, cyber threats, transnational crime, and the need to safeguard key national agendas.

Earlier this year, Jakarta’s military command structure was also elevated when Greater Jakarta Military Commander Deddy Suryadi received a promotion to Lieutenant General in March 2026. As a result, the Jakarta Military Command became the only regional military command in Indonesia led by a three-star general.

Security analysts view the dual three-star leadership as a strong signal that the government is intensifying security oversight in the capital as Jakarta continues to face increasingly complex security and governance challenges.

Who Is Asep Edi Suheri?

Commissioner General Asep Edi Suheri is widely known within Indonesia’s law enforcement circles for his extensive experience in criminal investigations and cybercrime enforcement.

Born in Tasikmalaya, West Java, on November 16, 1972, Asep graduated from the Indonesian Police Academy in 1994.
Throughout his career, he has handled major cybercrime, narcotics, and transnational crime cases.

Before becoming Jakarta Police Chief in 2025, he served in several strategic positions, including Police Chief of Cirebon City, Deputy Police Chief of Bekasi City, and Police Chief of Tangerang.

His career later advanced within the Criminal Investigation Agency (Bareskrim), where he served as Deputy Director for Special Crimes, Director of Cyber Crimes, and Deputy Chief of the Criminal Investigation Agency.

Asep was appointed Jakarta Police Chief in 2025, replacing Karyoto, who was promoted to Head of the National Police Security Maintenance Agency.

With his new three-star rank, Asep now joins the top echelon of Indonesia’s national police leadership (Wan)
