Green Building Certification to Accelerate Jakarta’s Rise as a Global City

JAKARTA, JAKTIMES.COM – Accelerating green building certification for all government offices under the Jakarta Provincial Government is a strategic step to push the capital’s global city ranking from 74th into the top 50, according to Jakarta DPRD Commission A member Manuara Siahaan.

He stressed that the certification is more than just a symbol of a modern, eco-friendly city — it’s also about energy efficiency, budget savings, and a key metric in global city assessments.

“As a modern city aiming for global status, almost all government buildings should meet these criteria to save energy,” Manuara said on Monday (Aug 11).

Green building status, he explained, is determined through assessment by qualified consultants, with clear scoring variables ranging from energy efficiency and water usage to workspace effectiveness and employee comfort. The certification comes in several levels, from Gold to the highest, Platinum.

“This is one of the indicators for becoming a global city. At the very least, we should aim for Gold,” he said.

Manuara recommended that the Jakarta Office of Public Works, Spatial Planning, and Land Affairs (CKTRP) accelerate compliance with green building standards across all provincial government offices. He emphasized that historical buildings need not change their original designs to qualify.

“Even heritage buildings can become green buildings. The installations, water systems, electrical systems, and even acoustics can be optimized without altering the original structure. If we achieve that, it would be amazing — heritage buildings that are also energy-efficient,” he noted.

Beyond energy savings, Manuara believes green building certification will help lift Jakarta’s position in global city rankings.

“If we want to climb the rankings, all indicators must be clear, broken down, and assigned to the relevant departments. Green building certification is one of them,” he said.

He added that the concept aligns with Jakarta’s public service standardization program across all administrative levels, ensuring consistent service quality from sub-district to city hall.

“When people visit the sub-district office in Kebagusan or Cipinang Utara, they should get the same welcome and the same level of service. That’s how Jakarta builds its image as a city of public service,” Manuara concluded.
