JAKARTA, JAKTIMES.COM – The Indonesian Election Commission (KPU RI) has officially received the nomination documents of Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka as presidential candidates for the 2024 Presidential Election (Pilpres).
The documents were directly received by KPU RI Chairman Hasyim Asy’ari from the Prabowo-Gibran pair in the Main Meeting Room at the KPU RI Office in Jakarta on Wednesday, around 11:50 AM local time.
“KPU expresses its gratitude for the presence of the combined political party leadership, who began registering their prospective candidate pairs, as we know, the registration of prospective candidates is scheduled from October 19 to October 25, 2023,” said Hasyim after receiving the registration documents.
Hasyim also expressed his gratitude for the coordination of political parties supporting the prospective presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs during the registration. He noted that the registration of Prabowo-Gibran on the last day, which fell on a Wednesday, is considered an auspicious day for elections.
“Today, Wednesday, is the last day for the registration of prospective presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs. I think we all know that Wednesday is the sacred day of the election because historically, voting day is always on a Wednesday,” he explained.
He added that, administratively, the documents received by KPU RI will be assessed for completeness. If the documents are incomplete, KPU RI will give the supporting political parties time to complete them.
“Based on information from the KPU Secretariat through Silon, the candidacy documents and candidate eligibility requirements are considered complete,” Hasyim revealed, as quoted from Jaktimes.com via Antara.
Following this, the registration documents will undergo a verification process, with two criteria: true or false, and valid or not valid. Hasyim mentioned that the presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs will be given the opportunity to rectify any documents deemed invalid.
In the next stage, KPU will issue a letter of recommendation to the presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs for a physical and mental health examination. This assessment will determine their ability to perform the duties of president and vice president.
The health tests will be conducted by an examination team at RSPAD Gatot Soebroto, with Prabowo-Gibran scheduled for Thursday, October 26.
KPU RI opened the registration of presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs from October 19 to October 25, 2023, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM local time. On the last day, it was open until 11:59 PM local time.
According to Law No. 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections (UU Pemilu), presidential/vice-presidential candidate pairs must be proposed by political parties or coalitions of political parties participating in the election that meet the requirement of obtaining at least 20 percent of the total seats in the DPR or 25 percent of the valid votes nationally in the previous parliamentary election.
Currently, there are 575 seats in the parliament, which means that presidential/vice-presidential candidate pairs in the 2024 Pilpres must have the support of at least 115 seats in the DPR RI. They can also be supported by political parties or coalitions of political parties participating in the 2019 elections with a minimum of 34,992,703 valid votes (Ant/TJT).
